Piercing the Darkness

So, I've been reading these two books for an extremely long time.  I just finished the last one tonight, after reading them both for like a year.  Let me just say, Frank Peretti did a phenomenal  job.  Both of these books were based on a spiritual warfare conspiracy that tries to take over two towns, one town in the first book, and a different town in the second.  It gives you all the details of the angels fighting the demons, and how prayer gives power and strength to angels.  This is fiction, of course, but it is very realistic.  These situations really could happen.
Before I read this book,  I hadn't really thought much about how powerful prayer really is.  There were points in the story where the angels couldn't really do much about a situation because their prayer cover wasn't strong enough.  They depended on the saints to come to the Lord in prayer for their strength.
Also, this book has made me think probably more than any other book I've ever read.  I mean it's waaaaaay up there on that list of books that you should NOT read before you go to bed because it hurts your brain too much...But, I really, really enjoyed it.  And learned a lot.

I strongly recommend this book. :).

  1. Hey Mal,
Congratulations on reading through these books. I remember reading these when I was just out of college. I enjoyed them too, and now as a pastor I know I have been influenced by the faithful pastor who faithfully prayed for his congregation and his community.

There is much good that I received from reading Peretti's books, but I also had a few concerns. One of the concerns is that it seems that he makes it look like God is not sovereign over all things like demons, but rather God must rely on humans to pray in order to accomplish His will. This then makes it appear as if we are the ones on whom the future of the church and the world depends on, which clearly is not what Scripture teaches. Another concern along with that is the heavy emphasis on "prayer cover" for the angels in order to be successful against the demons in spiritual warfare. I agree that the Bible emphasizes the importance of prayer in spiritual warfare, especially in Ephesians 6. But we will not find the phrase, "prayer cover" in the Bible nor do we see many examples of it. In the Bible humans as well as angels depend upon God for their strength.
